Best Low-Light Houseplants for Beginners (That Are Almost Impossible to Kill)
Share
Let's be real: not every home looks like a Pinterest greenhouse with skylights and south-facing windows. Most of us are working with a cozy apartment, a north-facing bedroom, or an office with one sad fluorescent bulb. And that's totally fine β because some of the most beautiful houseplants out there actually love low light.
Whether you're a total beginner or just tired of plants giving up on you, this list is for you. These are our favorite low-light champions that are forgiving, gorgeous, and available right here at The Pink Llama.
1. Pothos (Golden, Marble Queen, N'Joy, and More)
If there's one plant that every beginner needs in their life, it's a pothos. This trailing vine is basically invincible. It tolerates low light, irregular watering, and general neglect like an absolute champ. Stick one on a shelf, let it trail down, and watch it grow like crazy with almost zero effort.
We carry a ton of varieties β Golden Pothos, Marble Queen, Cebu Blue, N'Joy, Neon, and more. Each one has its own personality, but they all share that same easygoing vibe. Start with a Golden or Marble Queen if you want something classic, or go for Cebu Blue if you want to impress your friends with something a little more unique.
Light: Low to bright indirect. Basically anywhere.
Water: When the top inch of soil feels dry.
Vibe: The most chill plant you'll ever own.
2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
The snake plant is basically a succulent that decided it didn't need sunlight. It thrives on neglect, tolerates low light, and only needs watering every few weeks. We're not exaggerating when we say this plant has survived in windowless offices.
We have a huge range of snake plants β from classic Zeylanica and Jade to more unusual varieties like Starfish, Sayuri, and Black Gold. They look incredibly architectural and modern, which makes them perfect for minimalist spaces.
Light: Low light to indirect bright light.
Water: Every 2β4 weeks (seriously, less is more).
Vibe: Stoic, stunning, and unbothered.
3. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ plant is the dark horse of the houseplant world. It has glossy, deep green leaves that look almost fake they're so perfect, and it genuinely does not care if you forget to water it for a month. Its underground rhizomes store water, so it's built for drought conditions.
We carry both the classic green ZZ and the dramatic Black Queen variety, which has near-black foliage that looks absolutely stunning in any room.
Light: Low to medium indirect light.
Water: Every 2β3 weeks, even less in winter.
Vibe: Effortlessly cool.
4. Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron Cordatum)
Think of the heartleaf philodendron as pothos's slightly more elegant cousin. It has the same trailing habit and easy-care nature, but with gorgeous heart-shaped leaves that have a beautiful glossy finish. It grows fast, forgives missed waterings, and looks incredible draped over a bookshelf or hanging from a macramΓ© planter.
We also carry the Neon Philodendron, a bright chartreuse version that practically glows in low-light rooms.
Light: Low to bright indirect light.
Water: When the top inch of soil is dry.
Vibe: Elegant and easygoing.
5. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)
Chinese Evergreens are the unsung heroes of the houseplant world. They come in a wild range of colors β deep green, silver, pink, red β and they all tolerate low light incredibly well. The more colorful varieties (like Lady Valentine or Red Siam) do prefer a bit more light, but the greener ones are truly happy in dim corners.
These are one of our personal favorites at The Pink Llama because they look like they require expert-level care, but they really don't. Great for impressing guests without breaking a sweat.
Light: Low to medium indirect light (greener varieties do best in low light).
Water: Every 1β2 weeks.
Vibe: Low-key luxurious.
A Few Quick Tips for Low-Light Plant Success
- "Low light" doesn't mean no light. It means no direct sun. All plants need some natural light to survive β if you can comfortably read a book in the spot, your plant will probably be okay.
- Water less in low light. Plants in low light grow slower and drink less. Overwatering is the #1 killer of houseplants, so always check the soil before you water.
- Dust your leaves. Dusty leaves can't absorb light as efficiently. Give them a gentle wipe with a damp cloth every month or so.
- Rotate your plant every few weeks so all sides get even light exposure.
